How to Grow into the Next Level

This post will share specific steps to level up, how to know if growth is happening, and reflection questions to ask as you’re going through a period of transition.

“Your strength doesn’t come from winning. It comes from struggles and hardship. Everything that you go through prepares you for the next level.” -Germany Kent

I think we all wish at times that we could see our journey unfold before our eyes, without first having to go through it. But it’s important to realize that if you knew all the steps it would take to get you to where you want to be, it would be too overwhelming and may prevent you from going after what you really want.

You would see the struggles, the obstacles, and the work that would be required to reach your potential and it might paralyze you instead of propel you. We’re given opposition along the course which challenges us to grow through it or give up. Those who continue to grow and not give up are the ones who excel.

As you start excelling in one area, you gain confidence.

That confidence starts to exude throughout your body, allowing you to do incredible things. But then, you start to beat that current level, and you begin to outgrow it. It may even start to get boring and mundane, because it’s lackluster in challenge.

Yes, you could stay there and continue to excel, but you want more and desire to go to the next level. Each level is going to require new growth, new challenges, and more frustration for you to dissect and conquer before you get confident in that new level.

That’s why the old saying “New level, new devils” is so important to remember. It’s not there to knock you down, it’s a reminder that what you are experiencing is challenging you to rise and develop into the type of person that is being called to dominate the newest level.

The thing about reaching a new level is it forces you to rise to get there and prevents you from staying stagnant.

High performers and overachievers know that reaching new levels forces you to rise to the challenge. Even so, they can also get stuck in the web of fear, get frustrated, and let it temporarily defeat them until they shift their mindset back into the knowing that this is part of the growth process.

Although this is a natural part of the process, it’s important to realize that shifting your mindset back into the “I have to go through this to get to the other side,” the faster you will build momentum to take on the storm as it arises, and not let it hold you back.

“God prepares you for your next level before He finally takes you there. It is not the other way around.” -Benjamin Suulola

How exactly do you adapt to this mindset shift?

It’s important to shift from “why is this happening to me” to “this is growing me and preparing me for what I desire deep in my heart.” This rigorous practice teaches you the lessons you must learn to get to my next level of potential. It’s not punishment; it’s the training necessary that the next level demands.

Know that you get overwhelmed with the opposition that seems to just be relentlessly throwing itself at you. Remind yourself of the next level that you want to achieve with these questions.

  • What does that next level look like?

  • What type of characteristics does a person at that level need to exude?

  • List all of the obstacles you are facing and connect the growth that it’s teaching you:

    • Obstacles→ Growth

      • __________________ → __________________

      • __________________ → __________________

      • __________________ → __________________

      • __________________ → __________________

      • __________________ → __________________

Lean into this exercise every time you reach next level opposition. Dissect the obstacle, indicate the fear, and illustrate the growth within the obstacle.

Self Love Resources

As a recap: Growth cannot be handed to you; it must be earned.

  • There is no way around reaching the next level except to endure the changes and challenges that mold you into the person who can withstand all the next level comes with.

  • God prepares you for the next level before he ushers you into it.

  • Prepare your mind and heart for the next level by playing forward what it might look like, how you might react, and how the challenges lead to growth.
